Mr. Prepared Says Your Personality is Key!

In my new article, What’s Your Disaster Personality?, I talk about how when disaster hits, most people don’t panic – they shut down. And, believe it or not, they fail to do the basic things they need to do to ensure their own survival. Like the most obvious thing of all, being prepared and having an emergency survival kit and having a plan!

I found this out by researching how people act during the kinds of disasters we’ve seen all around the world this year – tornados, earthquakes, fires, and cyclones. It was quite illuminating!

For instance, people hold on to their roles when something bad happens. At a fire in a crowded Beverly Hills restaurant, for example, the waiters and hostesses at the restaurant guided the diners to safety – and the diners listened, even though most of them were rich and powerful.

I also discovered that most people resist to change from who they are. We’ve all seen bad disaster movies where someone who’s kind of a bad person is trapped in a horrible situation like a flood or earthquake, and they suddenly turn into a great, wonderful hero, redeeming themselves by sacrificing their life to save somebody. Guess what, emergency can bring out the best in anyone! It doesn’t matter who they are at that moment in time, they are all in the same situation.

What is true, is that failure to act during a disaster can be fatal. And so can failing to act before a disaster! Emergency preparedness isn’t for the paranoid – it’s for the sensible person who wants to live through whatever the world throws at them!. Having food supplies on hand, a water purifier, an generator – or, best of all, having everything together in a specially-made emergency kit – is easy to accomplish and makes for good survival sense.
